Snow Coming at 10,000 Feet? My Cold Weather Plan Is to Just Move

Welcome to Part 1 of my Cold Weather Series. People ask how I handle cold weather in my Travato. My number one plan is pretty simple: I just move somewhere warmer.

Leaving before the snow hit

I was parked up at 10,000 feet of elevation, and rain and snow were coming in. Instead of waiting it out, I packed up and left before it fully hit.

The advantage of living on wheels

That’s one of the best parts of van life. My home moves. If the weather turns, I don’t have to sit in it. I can drive somewhere lower, sunnier and warmer.

So that’s what I did. I drove somewhere lower. A bit of driving, and Tsali and I ended up parked somewhere in the sun instead of the snow.

Tsali approves

Tsali is a senior golden, and he was happy to trade a cold, wet spot for a sunny one. So was I.

Coming up in this series

Moving isn’t always possible, and sometimes it’s only cold at night. Part 2 covers what I do on nights that drop below freezing, and Part 3 covers Winterizing My Travato.

Gear for cold nights

When I can’t move, I cover every window (more in Part 2). A windshield cover like mine: Covercraft UVS100 for Ram ProMaster.
