Hidden Gem: How to Fill Your Fresh Water Tank from INSIDE Your Travato 59K (Gravity Hack with Collapsible Jug)

If you’ve ever driven around in circles looking for a potable water fill station with a thirsty van and a senior Golden Retriever staring at you, this one’s for you.

External Inlets: City Fill (left), and Tank Fill (right)

After five years full-time van life in my Travato 59K, I’ve learned that the best hacks are the ones hidden in plain sight. Today I’m sharing my favorite water management trick: filling the fresh water tank from inside the van using a collapsible container and gravity. No external hose drama, no stress.

Why This Hack Saves the Day

Most people only know about the external inlets. But when you’re boondocking in remote spots, dispersed camping, or just can’t find a clean station, the internal inlet is a game-changer.

It lets you pour water directly into the tank without climbing around outside or dealing with pressure issues. Pair it with a collapsible jug and you’ve got a simple, reliable system that keeps us moving freely — especially important when Tsali needs consistent fresh water for his senior routine.

Step-by-Step: How to Use the Internal Fresh Water Inlet on the Travato 59K

  1. Locate the Inlet Inside the van (on the interior wall next to your bed on the passenger side). It’s a standard gravity fill port designed exactly for this.
  2. Prep Your Collapsible Container I use a high-quality food-grade collapsible jug (5–7 gallons works great). Make sure it’s clean and you’re using potable water.
  3. Position & Pour Place the full collapsible container and long stem funnel. Connect or pour directly into the funnel to the internal inlet. Gravity does the rest — no pump needed!
  4. Monitor the Tank Keep an eye on your water level gauge (or listen for the overflow vent) so you don’t overfill.
  5. Sanitize & Maintain Always sanitize your inlet and hoses/jugs regularly. I use a simple bleach solution or dedicated RV sanitizer.

Real Talk from the Road with Tsali

This hack has been a sanity saver on long stretches between towns. Tsali (my 13-year-old Golden co-pilot) stays comfortable, I stay relaxed, and we don’t waste time or fuel hunting for stations. Van life is about freedom — little efficiencies like this add up to more trail time and fewer headaches.

It’s one of those “why didn’t I know this sooner” features that makes the Travato 59K such a smart Class B choice.
