Best Short Hike in Breckenridge: Blue Lakes Trail (Dog-Friendly)

If you’re in Breckenridge for just a short time but still want to experience epic mountain scenery, Blue Lake Trail is one of the best quick hikes in the area.

Why This Hike Works So Well

  • Short and rewarding
  • Stunning alpine views
  • Easy enough for older dogs and beginners
  • Quick access from town

Pro Tip: Go EarlyArrive between 6–7 a.m. if you can. We pulled in at 7 a.m., made coffee and breakfast in our vans, and the parking lot was still nearly empty. By mid-morning the lot fills up quickly, and finding a good spot becomes much harder. Early arrival also means quieter trails and better light for photos.

Dog-Friendly Adventure

We brought our 13-year-old Golden Retriever, Tsali, and this trail was perfect for him. It’s short, not too steep, and has plenty of gentle sections. He handled it comfortably and clearly loved being out in the mountains.

We only hiked as far as the dam and continued a little way beyond it. Right around the dam area you’ll find several nice, flat patches where you can sit, relax, and soak in the views. We stopped for snacks, let Tsali rest, and enjoyed the scenery for about an hour before heading back down. The whole round-trip felt very manageable.

Water & Essentials

Bring plenty of water, especially if you’re hiking with a dog. That said, we noticed natural spring water seeping out of the rocks along the trail — a nice backup source for thirsty four-legged friends (just be sure to filter or treat it if you plan to drink it yourself).

Quick Summary

Distance to dam area: Short (great for half-day or less)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Best for: Visitors with limited time, older dogs, families, or anyone wanting big views without a huge commitment
Parking: Free but limited — arrive early!

Blue Lake Trail delivers maximum scenery with minimal time and effort. Highly recommended if you only have a few hours to escape into the Colorado Rockies.
